In 1981, Gael Greene and James Beard founded Citymeals-on-Wheels by raising private funds to supplement the government's weekday meal delivery program. Today, Citymeals underwrites approximately 31 neighborhood-based meals-on-wheels programs to bring meals and friendly visits to homebound elderly New Yorkers on weekends, holidays and in times of emergency—when they would otherwise be hungry and alone. Since 1981 Citymeals has hand-delivered more than 43 million meals to the frail aged of the City. Last year alone, Citymeals supported the preparation and delivery of 2.1 million meals to 17,713 homebound elderly New Yorkers.
