BAM’s 40th annual celebration of African and African-American dance, music, art and film brings together dance companies from around the world. This season’s edition, helmed by artistic director Abdel R. Salaam, is entitled “The Healing Light of Rhythm: Tradition and Beyond”—a tribute to music and dance from Guinea. Participating troupes include NYC’s own Forces of Nature, the local Wula Drum and Dance Ensemble and Philadelphia’s hip-hop group Illstyle & Peace Productions. As part of the program, BAM will host a Memorial Day weekend bazaar with more than 150 African, Caribbean and African-American vendors selling food, crafts and clothes along the surrounding streets.
