The contemporary art world can trace its roots to a period of groundbreaking experimentation in the 1950s and '60s. This exhibition, made up of three sections—Leaving Midtown, Spaces for Art and Defining Downtown—explores the history of the Tanager, the Judson Art Gallery and George Maciunas’s AG Gallery. It also explores the work of well-known artists including Jim Dine, Allan Kaprow, Alex Katz, Claes Oldenburg and Yoko Ono.
