The Cathedral has a long history of both a sanctuary and an artist's workplace. This exhibit, part of the Dignity Initiative that launched in 2011, presents the work of modern and contemporary artists including Louise Bourgeois, For Freedoms, Jenny Holzer, Kiki Smith and Hank Willis Thomas as they explore the question of sanctuary and use the Cathedral as their canvas. Among the questions explored are: What does it mean to be a house of welcome and of refuge, to offer sanctuary to those in need? What are the threads connecting us, as individuals and as communities? The exhibit is accompanied by a long series of public programming through the Cathedral and its programmatic partners.
